Bahamas residents speak of Dorian’s fury
When Rochelle Stuart heard that hurricane Dorian was making its way to The Bahamas, she did everything that was necessary to ensure her safety.
But battening down the windows and doors, securing all entrances and stocking up food and other necessities was not enough, as Dorian, a category five hurricane, hit Freeport, Grand Bahama.
While Stuart spoke to THE STAR, she expressed her shock at the events taking place as water was rising rapidly.
"We have had flooding before but everyone is aware of areas prone to flooding and was warned before the storm to evacuate those areas. This is a new type of flooding, it has no respect for areas," she said.
Stuart said that she has never experienced anything like this and she is shaken. She said currently things are not looking good and they have a high chance of deteriorating.
Dorian, which made landfall on the small island on Sunday is one of the strongest storms to hit the island.
Up to Monday evening, David Lee, who resides in Nassau, said that he has not heard from his brother since Sunday but he has hopes that is doing okay.
WAITING IT OUT
"I spoke to him Saturday night and asked him why didn't he come to the mainland and he said that he was going to wait it out. Since the hurricane hit, I haven't heard from him but I don't think anything has happened to him," he said.
Lee's brother, Gary, was staying in Abaco for work purposes. He said that he thinks there may be some roof damage to where he was staying but everything else is fine.
"Where he is, is above ground a little so I don't think it is affected like the flat areas," he said.
Lee said that things are peachy on his side and the only nuisance he is experiencing is the lack of electricity.
So far Dorian has claimed the lives of five people including an eight-year-old boy.
From reports Stuart has received, she said that the hurricane has caused severe flooding.
"Many persons have had to evacuate their homes due to damages and flooding. It is very risky to even open your door at the moment," she said.
Videos have surfaced of the devastation that Dorian has been causing, with houses and cars underwater.
