JDF Coast Guard recovers body of man who allegedly drowned in St James

November 17, 2025

The Jamaica Defence Force says its Coast Guard team has recovered the body of a man who was allegedly swept away while trying to cross the Step River in St James on Sunday.

Reports are that the man attempted to wade across the river but the strong currents pulled him under. A search was launched and the JDF was called in to help.

A dive team from the Second District Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard went to the scene and carried out an underwater sweep. The body was later found and removed from the river.

The remains were handed over to the police who are now probing the incident.

The Coast Guard is reminding the public to be extremely careful around swollen rivers, especially during heavy rainfall when currents can turn deadly in seconds.
